Restoration Tile!

When browsing through This Old House Magazine (yes, I'm a fan!) I spotted a feature on this tile company: Restoration Tile.

Amazing. These folks in Arkansas are recreating historic tiles, and are doing a beautiful job... don't you think? Their website includes installation photos, catalogs a HUGE variety of patterns, and even carries historic sizes and colors...

Look at these STUNNING tile borders!

Doesn't it just make you want to buy a historic home and restore it?

Guest Room Headboard: Before and After

So, we did a little headboard DIY at my house. I found a (hideous) queen sized headboard for $20.00 at a thrift store, and with a little upholstery foam, batting, fabric and upholstery tacks, we created something a little better...

before...

after...

Just a few tips...

*Purchase a medium to soft upholstery foam.  I purchased the upholstery foam for $60.00 at JoAnn Fabrics. I knew the exact dimension that I needed and the gals there cut it for me.

*If you attempt to upholster an old wooden headboard with nailheads, make sure that you are nailing your nailheads into a FLAT surface. As you can see, the bed that I used has a curved frame... this made the nailhead process EXTREMELY frustrating. You have to get that angle just right to create a straight line.

Trimmed Out!

I have secretly toyed with the idea of using pom pom trim somewhere in my house... You know, pom pom trim is funny... it's sort of fancy and a little playful. I don't know, I just like it.

I like the idea of adding it to the leading edge of a drapery panel...

or, using it on a pillow with a solid fabric...

This idea is great. Holly at Decor8 blogged about this tip (from a Dutch magazine) last year. It's an IKEA blanket spruced up with colorful pom pom trim.

Here are a few (easily available) pom pom options from Lewis & Sheron!

Tori Mellott's Tiny Apartment

Tori Mellott, the former Decor Editor for our beloved Domino Magazine, has one kick ass apartment. Sorry, but she does. This beauty was featured in the September, 2008 issue. And, the kicker? It's only 450 square feet!

Recognize this office? This was in Tori's previous apartment... you might spot that large silhouette wall hanging in her new living room!

Read an article HERE from Apartment Therapy. Tori shares her tips on how to make a small space feel bigger!

Vintage Globes!

It's back to school time, so it seemed like a fitting week to address vintage globes! I've briefly mentioned vintage globes before, but didn't say enough about this unique room accessory. No longer regulated to Dad's office, globes are making appearances all over the house!

Even in the dining room?

I love the aged patina of a vintage globe... plus, it's fun to see how the world has changed in just the last fifty years or so. If you are collector, or a budding globe collector, this is one of my favorite sites for help on dating the origin of your vintage globe. Plus, it will help you brush up on your geography. Do YOU know where Tanzania is?

There are a couple of cool globes on the site right now!

1950 Cram's Universal Globe available HERE.

Vintage globe coin bank available HERE.

or, maybe a brass globe with a hidden storage compartment? available HERE.
