The Alternative Jack O' Lantern

Halloween is a mere 10 days away, and that means it's almost time to carve Jack O' Lanterns!  Here are three little pumpkins that I carved for our porch last Halloween...

I was thinking about doing something different this year. So, I did a little research and found a whole slew of inspiring ideas for "alternative" Jack O' Lanterns.  Here are some of my favorites to help spruce up your own haunted house (or spooky front porch)...

Paint the pumpkin black! Next carve out the face, add whiskers and ears, and you have a Black Cat O' Lantern (or Bat O' Lantern).

With black paint or permanent marker, create the silhouette of a haunted house (it could even be your own house!), and carve out windows and a large looming full moon.

Perfect for tiny pumpkins or gourds-- use red push pins for eyes and vampire teeth!

Maybe you don't have time to carve a pumpkin (or you're not too keen on making a huge mess). These no-carve ideas seem super simple and really fun...

Candy corn pumpkins!

Using a fine-tipped Sharpie pen and a paper doily as a stencil, draw a detailed pattern on the pumpkins. Love this vintage look!

I love this place setting idea-- perfect for a spooky Halloween dinner party. Attach bat wings and you're done.

You don't even need a pumpkin for this adorable display. Just a magic marker and a few ballons!

Last October, I used a carved out pumpkin to create a lovely fall centerpiece:

(and used a vegetable peeler to monogram it!)

By using a similarly carved out pumpkin, you'll have an instant beer cooler!

There are so many ways to get into the Halloween spirit this week.
I think I'll try to make one of those doily pumpkins this weekend.  :)

What's your favorite style of Jack O' Lantern?  I tend to carve pumpkins with scary faces (boo!) and my husband loves to make a "cannibal pumpkin" (where one big Jack O' Lantern appears to be eating a smaller one).  My parents always carved friendly Jack O' Lanterns with big smiley faces and happy eyes.  They even topped them with straw hats.

all of these pumpkin ideas were found at Martha Stewart and Better Homes & Gardens

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

I carved three pumpkins....

and toasted pumkin seeds last night.
It's a Robson Family tradition you know (second year running).

Also, I can't stop eating mini Almond Joys.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween Weekend!

Happy Halloween Weekend, ghouls!  These are my favorite Halloween images that I've been hoarding away (from last years Halloween issue of Country Living, and of course, Martha Stewart).  Did you know that all of those "spooky spider webs" are made with cheescloth?!  I love that trick.

We'll be carving pumpkins this weekend, and lighting our bloody candles.  I hope you have a safe and happy Halloween!

xx

Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Martha Stewart has posted some creative last minute Halloween costumes!  My favorite are these precious little Hula Girls (with skirts made from mop heads!)...

This Bee-Hive costume (her braids are made with yarn!) is also adorable...

and a Beekeeper for Mom or Dad...

I like these Spider Shades...  these look easy to make.

This Medusa is pretty scary!  (but looks do-able)...

What do you think?  Do you guys dress up for Halloween?  For the last few years, I've worn the same costume when kids come to the door: I'm Hermione from Harry Potter.  I even have a witch's hat with the Hogwarts insignia.  Yes, I am a proud fan. (And for the record, I look more like this Hermione than this version of Hermione.)

But to be honest, Halloween has completely crept up on me this year (no pun intended).  I've been swamped with work and I feel like I just realized that Halloween is THIS Sunday... we need to carve pumpkins and toast pumpkin seeds!  And, I haven't bought ANY candy yet.

It's our first Halloween in this old house, and I wonder if we'll get trick-or-treaters.

Halloween Baby

These knitted Halloween costumes are so precious, don't you think?  I love that little lion!

My sweet friend Amanda just gave birth to a little girl two days ago!  Her name is Brooklyn and she is beautiful.  Congratulations, Amanda, Casey, and big brother Ben!

Bloody Candles!

Holy Martha Stewart.  I actually pulled off this Halloween craft

I wanted to show off these fabulous black glass candlesticks in a creepy way, so I tried Martha's "bloody candles" craft.  Well, lo and behold, it worked!  And, it couldn't have been ANY EASIER (and, no,  I didn't burn myself).

Everyone should try this...  it was really fun.  And, I even impressed my husband.

Watch Martha Stewart demonstrate "Creepy Candles" HERE.

There is a LARGE collection of fabulous black servingware-- perfect for entertaining this Halloween!  In addition, there are vintage cast iron lanterns (in the shape of an owl or an eagle-- perfect for flickering candles on the front porch!), vintage Ouija Boards, and brass skeleton keys!

Pumpkins In Berks County

I was driving through Berks County this morning, and came across a country farm stand that was so wonderful, I couldn't resist sharing it with you.  Not only did they have baked goods (like shoe fly pie!) made by good God-fearing Amish women, but the pumpkins and gourds were out of this world.

They had the traditional orange pumpkins, the fantastical "fairy" pumpkins, white pumpkins, tiny pumpkins, large pumpkins, and GREY pumpkins.  I've never seen grey pumpkins!

Hope you are having a lovely Fall Weekend!

Our Pumpkin Patch

A real pumpkin patch.  In the country.  Growing up in Southern California, our pumpkin patches were in parking lots...  so, this was a fun trip for me.

Friday's Etsy Shop: The Bold Banana

I carry reusable totes with me every single weekend to the flea markets...  but, mine are not as cool as these.  Seems like I may need an upgrade!  The Bold Banana is a silk screening etsy shop that (apart from their catchy name) makes graphic tote bags, messenger bags, mens and women's tees, and even aprons

And, I love their collection of illustrations from Alice In Wonderland.  It was one of my most favorite books as a kid, and the detailed line drawings just make me feel more imaginative...

I personally think that the Skull and Frankenstein bags would be good for lugging heavy candy around a neighborhood...
