As summer comes to an end (no!), the topic of heating our house has gradually found its way back into conversation. We have radiant heat (which I love!), powered by an enormous oil tank that lives in the basement. That heat is kept somewhat low (it's just the two of us here, after all), and we get by with space heaters here and there.
But, what I wouldn't give for two working fireplaces. Ours are closed up at the moment, but we plan on restoring them... someday. Until then, these images are my inspiration...
Happy Thursday!

Funny you should mention heat...We have an old oil furnace (a furnace that every winter, we swear we'll never use again). After four years of swearing, we finally had the heat guy come up yesterday to give us some options. A warm house is a wonderful thing - I know I look forward to having one!

The weather out in LA is hotter than one of these fires would be. Pretty inspiration nonetheless.
I dream of fireplaces too! I have three favorite kinds: a simple limestone fireplace, a simple fireplace with a single slab of reclaimed wood as the mantel, and an open hearth fireplace. One day, we'll have our fireplaces. We are considering radiant heat for the new house...have you ever had any leaks under the floor boards?
what I wouldn't give for a fireplace!
I had several of this fireplace pics in my own inspiration files for awhile now. Though we have a working fireplace (which I love), it is not particularly inspiration-worthy right now. Eventually we'll fund a fireplace facelift. Good luck staying warm this winter!
Oh gosh! How in the world do you pick one?! They are all wonderful.
We heat our entire house with the woodstove in our dining room (yep, that beast heats my whole victorian farmhouse!). We have a fireplace in the pantry off our kitchen, which we are moving and opening up into the kitchen as we remodel it. There are two flu pipes, and we are opening the fireplace into the new office that will be above the kitchen. Can't wait!! I'll be posting pics of other house projects on my blog:

Oh man, I love this compilation. We have a fire place that does not work, but we are thinking of installing a tiny wood burning stove into it, and having the pipe go though the old chimney. I can't wait to do that, it will be so cozy!
Trina-- I know how you feel! Replacing our oil tank (and converting to electric) is on the to-do list! Even though the price is high, it still works for now!
designstiles-- I heard that you guys had a cool summer and now all of a sudden, it's reaching 100 degrees?! Hope you stay cool through the fall!
A House and Home-- we've never had any leaks under the floorboards, but we've only lived through one winter in this house. I love the radiators (versus the more typical pushed air) because it eliminated a lot of dust! Plus, radiant heat cretes a nice, even heat throughout. We like it.
Jennifer, Aimee, and Katie-- these are my favorite fireplaces (I especially love the marble hearths with the arched opening?). Thanks for the comments!
Deanna-- your reno sounds terrific! I'm going over to your blog to check it out now! Good luck! ;)
Michelle-- I saw your gorgeous living room on your blog! A wood buring stove would be charming in there. I agree.

Wow, gorgeous inspiration. I keep telling my husband I want to put a fireplace in to our house but we live in Florida and he keeps telling me I'm ridiculous!
oh Jenna Lyons...your black bedroom gets me everytime
Fireplaces make such great focal points in home...i really like older ornate ones....but then again there are some MODERN ones that are totally amazing too! :))))
