Inspired By: Brick Hardscaping

Dave and I are LOVING the look of brick hardscaping.  And, we've got some hardscaping projects in our future (with the upcoming build of our new carriage house), so we're really inspired to create something beautiful.  Here are some drool-worthy images that inspire me to start laying some brick down!

So, my question to the DIYers out there: have you tried a brick project like this before?  Did you use a sand base? Mortar?  Or combination of the two?  We're looking into using a sand filler with a polymer binding (to add a little more strength).  If you have experience, I would love to hear your feedback.

I have used them, but in lower traffic areas and just used sand. However, you should check out younghouselove.com They put in a patio...they highly recommend the polymeric sand.

We did our patio in brick pavers in a herringbone pattern and love it! We used the polymeric sand due to is ease rather than mortar and it's been about 2 years and we have had no issues. I actually love it more than I thought I would because we do have moss that's started to grow just in the "grout lines" and it gives such a gorgeous effect.

Wow! I love this post! We are looking to re-landscape for our 142 year old home. I would like to do something traditional, english formal garden and hardscape. OUr house is brick and I am afraid that brick pathways will be too much brick. Although this entry is making it VERY tempting! What are your thoughts?

HI! First of all we are almost neighbors!! I grew up in Philly and now live in Landenberg, Pa. I also knew a Kelly Galvin! She was the daughter of a friend. I adore hardscaping, all of it. We have done a SMALL brick landing and just used sand but I would suggest using something to make it less likely to shift etc. I will be your newest follower, so glad I found your blog! Came over from Belclaire House. XO, Pinky

some of these look like they may be concrete pavers. we had some brick walkways & they were poorly done, so over time they became uneven & a hazard. our contractor used mortar at the edges, up against the house & pool, with sand everywhere else. they brought in a piece of equipment to put down the base & tamp it down. you can get the pavers in a variety of colors & sizes, too!
