Looking For Party Planning Inspiration...

I need some party planning inspiration!  I'm planning a baby shower for my bestie and I've been scouring the internet for great inspiration.  So far, I've pulled some great images and I'm so excited to move forward...  but I thought I would ask you guys: do you know of some good blogs for party planning inspiration?

I love anything that Amy Atlas comes up with, and I'm obsessed with Hip Hip Hooray!  I loooooove Jordan Ferney's blog Oh Happy Day (do you read her blog? Aren't you loving her posts as a new resident in Paris?).  But, are there others that I'm not aware of?  Please share your favorite blogs for party planning!!

Hope you had a fabulous weekend!

The Sartorialist: The Visual Life

Every fashion related post I've ever done on this blog includes an image from The Sartorialist

Scott Schuman is such a genius and his images of "street style" are truly captivating.  In this "behind the camera" expose, we get to see how Scott finds his fashionable subjects, what motivates him to keep shooting, and why he describes his blog as a "digital park bench" (I love that).  Enjoy!

For the kids at work, this video is about 7 minutes long and requires sound.  Just fyi.  :)

Pixie Cuts & Bikes, in Paris

I love this image of a fancy Parisian girl with a pixie cut.  And that phenomenal bike!

(I love her shoes too)

Happy Holiday Weekend, kittens!

Before & After: Bryn's Black Wing Chairs

I had to post this terrific before & after from my blogging buddy, Bryn.  BLACK wing chairs with nailhead trim-- yes please!  I love how something so formal, like a wingback chair, can transform into something so...  well, badass (or is it bad ass? I'll need to consult the urban dictionary for this one).

Before:

After:

Aren't these fabulous?!

Bryn's living room looks like it's going to be gorgeous when she's through with it.  I love the black chest of drawers at the entry...  and she wants to paint the interior side of her front door black.  Great idea!  I am totally supportive of this move.

A Mid-Century Delight

I spotted these pictures over at Design Milk and I thought they were so good, I had to share them with all of you.  This mid-century modern gem of a house, located in Pasadena, California, was originally designed in 1959 by Buff, Straub & Hensman.  And, it was most recently remodeled by Los Angeles based architecture firm, Space International, keeping the original bones of the home intact.  Based on the images here, the design project looks like a major success.

That pool alone makes me swoon...

H&M Fall 2010

I have be honest, I'm a little bummed that summer is nearly over.  I love everything about it: long days, warm nights, lightning bugs, shorts, tank tops, flip flops, BBQ...  And, as a result, I usually don't give the coming season of fall a warm reception.  Until today.  I spotted these fall looks from H&M at one of my favorite blogs, Everything Fabulous, and I got a little excited about wearing knits again.

Martha Stewart Blogging Party

A couple of weeks ago, I got an email inviting me to a "Bloggers' Night Out" party hosted by Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) in New York City.  The invite mentioned "roof top deck", "wine, beer & light refreshments" and "mix and mingle with the creative team at Martha Stewart"...  ok, YES!  I want to go.  So, I immediately sent in my RSVP, thinking that my invite was sure to be a fluke and I wasn't going to give this up.

The party was last night, and to tell you the truth, I had a total blast.  I met fellow bloggers, Camila and Stefanie, in the MSLO lobby.  And, it was there that Camila introduced me to Deb, another fabulous blogger.  We heard that due to the 90 degree temps, the party had been moved inside where we would enjoy air conditioning (a total relief, by the way).  We rode the elevator up to the 9th floor and got to take a few glimpses at the MSLO offices (which were lovely, and very white) before entering the party.  I also met Crissie in the hallway (who also contributes to Coco+Kelley), and hit it off with her immediately.

In true Martha Stewart fashion, the party was a five star event...

The Champagne Bar...

Martha Stewart Weddings, in my opinion, is hands down the BEST wedding magazine on the market.  Darcy Miller, the Editorial Director, is a genius.  (And, Amanda Bevington knows that I feel this way because when we met, I just kept showing her pictures from MS Weddings and saying "This. I want everything to look like this.")  It's no surprise that the wedding-themed tables at the party were completely stunning.  The butterfly wedding cake was so beautiful, and I think that the shadow box on display featured a picture of Darcy Miller's parents on their wedding day.  It was just lovely.

Here is a snapshot of me with Darcy Miller, who couldn't have been a nicer person.  She looked fabulous by the way, and her platform sandals were sparkling!

The treats from One Girl Cookies were addictive!  And, perfectly displayed on Martha Stewart cake servers (from Macy's)...

All of the food from Martha Stewart Everyday Food, and Whole Living was divine.  The mini sliders were delicious... (And not pictured, but quickly devoured, were the margarita soaked watermelon slices.  Now that's how I like to eat my fruit).

Grilled s'mores...

There were prizes and raffles, fabulous tables, and games...  Deb even got in on the ping pong!

Martha and Kevin Sharkey, Senior Vice President (and home design guru)...

Party picture of me with Kevin Sharkey.  He was such a gentleman, and so enthusiastic-- he even played a bit of ping pong!

Before this party, I always assumed that Martha's faux bois tools were WAY too advaced for me.  But this gentleman showed me that I was wrong (maybe I was wrong, he had been practicing for a few hours)...

Now, let me just prefice this next shot by saying that I am a huge fan of Whatever, Martha! (hosted by Martha's daughter, Alexis Stewart, and her friend, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt).  I think that the show is very smart, hysterically funny, and both gals have great wit.  So naturally, I really hoped that they would be at the Martha party, and they were!  Now, I may or may not have creeped Alexis out by acting like a total lunatic and asking her to take a picture with me, and then proceeding to tell her that I was a huge fan (while completely invading her personal space, "is this too close?").  Then, the kicker?  I put my hand on her back while some kind person snapped the picture (note her uncomfortable face expression).  As if that weren't enough, I continued to hover around her long after the shot had been taken.  Needless to say, I think she may have left the party early.

me, Alexis & Jennifer of Whatever, Martha! and Camila

All in all, the party was wonderful.  I met some terrific people-- including Liz (of Say Yes to Hoboken) who was delightful, and Joanna (of A Cup Of Jo), my other blogging buddy who I FINALLY got to meet face to face.  So, that was fun.

Here's one more shot of us as the party wrapped... these three gals are a hoot and a half.  We had so much fun.

Happy Weekend, everyone!

Sunday Suppers: Rustic Italian Martini Bar

The pictures from this post are just too beautiful to ignore.  I had to share them with you here.  If you're not familiar, Sunday Suppers is a cooking/class/dining experience hosted in a waterfront loft in Brooklyn.  And, each one happens to be professionally styled, photographed, and then blogged about so all of us who couldn't make it, can drool over the results.

A Rustic Italian Martini Bar.  Gorgeous.

Love the crisp white tablecloth, glass decanters, fabulous labels and simple presentation...  and that glass server!

The only thing that makes me crazy is the tarnished silver.  Am I weird?  It's just that we polish SO much silver here at High Street Market that seeing the little bit of tarnish bugs me.  I get the whole effect, but I want to clean it.

Raspberry Bars

We have the greatest neighbors, who (I think) are happy that we moved into this old house and that we're making efforts to fix it up/restore it... (when we finished trimming the overgrown trees, our nextdoor neighbor brought over a nice bottle of wine to thank us.  How nice!).  Our neighbors also lend us extension ladders (this was especially helpful yesterday), they come over to check out the progress (involving unglamorous exterior projects-- no interior updates yet!), and our one neighbor even helped us pull out a very stubborn stump with his truck.  We always thank them for their support, but this weekend I think I need to step it up. I need to be a good neighbor and bake raspberry bars.  This seems like the obvious plan to me.

I found this delicious recipe on Smitten Kitchen, my new favorite recipe blog.  Have you checked it out?  This is the same gal who gave me the idea to make Dimply Plum Cake. She makes the most delicious and unique recipes.  I can't get enough.

"These aren’t, as the recipe notes warn, actually 'crumb' bars, with the streuselly topping you might see on crumbles or coffee cakes. Instead, they’re more like a raspberry sandwich cookie, yet less sweet than a typical dessert, and more earnest somehow.  I think you could easily swap the raspberries with blackberries."

For the crust and crumb:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 1/4 cups rolled oats
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch pieces

For the raspberry filling:

1/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 pound raspberries, fresh or frozen
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled

Make the crust and crumb: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter the bottom and sides of a 9-by-13-inch glass or light-colored metal baking pan. Put a long piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the pan, letting the parchment extend up the two short sides of the pan and overhang slightly on both ends. (This will make it easy to remove the bars from the pan after they have baked.) Butter the parchment.

Put the flour, brown sugar, oats, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon in a food processor. Pulse in short bursts until combined. Add the butter and pulse until loose crumbs form.

Reserve 1 1/2 cup of the mixture and set aside. (Note: The book suggests you reserve one cup only. My gut told me that was too little, and I upped it. I wanted to make sure the top of the raspberries were mostly covered, at least for packing purposes, and was glad I had changed it.) Pour the rest of the mixture into the prepared pan and use your hans or the back of a large wooden spoon to push the crust into an even layer at the bottom of the pan. The crust should touch the sides of the pan. Bake until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let the crust cool. Keep the oven on while you make the raspberry filling.

Make the raspberry filling: In a medium bowl, whisk the sugar, lemon zest, cinnamon and flour together. Add the raspberries, lemon juice and butter and use your hands to toss gently until the raspberries are evenly coated.

Assemble and bake the bars: Spread the raspberry filling evenly on top of the cooled crust. Sprinkle the reserved crust mixture evenly on top of the filling.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, rotating the pan every 15 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the filling starts to bubble around the edges.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely, then cut into squares and serve. The bars can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to two days.
