NY Gift Show 2012

Dave and I ran over to New York City this weekend to attend the New York International Gift Fair. Going to the show is sort of like going to Disneyland-- you pre-plan your route and make sure that you never get lost, you wear comfortable shoes (I failed to do that this year), you meet a LOT of "characters" (ha ha), you spend way too much for a cafeteria lunch, and there's about 7 hours of walking. And, overall? It's REALLY fun. :)

Here are a few shots from the trip...

Normally, the name of the game is get in and get out! We drive into NYC and leave as soon as possible. But this year, we decided to stay in the city for dinner. We met one of our dearest friends at Patsy's Italian Restaurant on 56th Street. We ended up staying there for two hours, we ate a ton of delicious food, drank wine, and we laughed a lot. It was the perfect ending to a very busy day.

One more thing I want to say about the Gift Show: everyone brings their best. You look around and you can't help but notice the rich talent of this industry. There are artists, small businesses, large businesses, and entrepreneurs all in the same place. Everyone is proud of their work, everyone wants to succeed, everyone is working incredibly hard to make a difference in their industry. It's a modern marketplace of ideas and the "next great thing"... I always leave the show feeling refreshed and re-inspired. And, I can't wait to go back in August. :)

Things have been busy busy over here! We're trying to expand the store, by adding some new and exciting products (stay tuned!)... and in addition to that, I'm working on a few local interior design projects. Every design is completely different and I am LOVING the creative challenge. Here's what I've been up to this week...

I did a little antique shopping for a few clients:

found these 1930s French art deco side chairs with pitch-perfect leopard upholstery(!!!) for a client's new living room. They were designed by legendary French designer, Jean-Michel Frank. We need to repair some of the caning, but overall? Finding these chairs MADE MY WEEK. They're a pretty big deal and I'm obsessed with them.

Earlier in the week, I stopped by Lee Jofa/Brunschwig & Fils to shop for wallpaper.

But, I got distracted by the panels and panels of brand new Brunschwig fabrics. Heaven!! The overall theme was texture texture texture... and these crewel prints were by far my favorite:

that's 6 inch crewel trim, people! 6 INCH.

At Home by Suzanne Rheinstein

Add to cart! I just bought Suzanne Rheinstein's 2010 book At Home: A Style for Today with Things from the Past.

While Suzanne Rheinstein's work tends to lean a little more "fancy lady" than I'm used to... she's a complete master at what she does. I'll take any good excuse to buy an interior design book, and I can't wait to pour over the pages of this one. Plus, the title is perfectly descriptive and the cover is a showstopper. That living room is actually Suzanne's personal residence in Manhattan. Photographed by Elle Decor in 2010, here are a few more images of her home...

Inspired Bedding

I love this old advertisement from Kate Spade. The bedding combination is wonderful, isn't it? The graphic yellow & white, mixed with the more tailored (and unexpected) navy-trimmed shams... and the solid yellow blanket. Mixing different patterns and colors will create a more custom look. And, it's a lot more interesting than a bed where every piece matches the next. So, don't be afraid to mix it up!

I was recently asked to list some go-to retail resources for bedding. On the short list is Frette, Leontine Linens, Yves Delorme, Serena & Lily, Restoration Hardware, Kate Spade, Williams Sonoma Home, Pottery Barn and West Elm. I know that there are a slew of others that I've missed, but that list is pretty comprehensive for me, and it covers a ton of different price points and styles. What's your go-to resource for bed linens?

If you're looking to spruce up your bedding this year, you might only need to replace a few items. Keep the sheets, duvet and shams-- then, add a fun bedskirt and a pair of throw pillows. A Royal Restoration

The February 2012 issue of Architectural Digest arrived in my mailbox this weekend. And, boy is it good. On the cover: Prince Charles and his newly renovated historic mansion, Dumfries House. The article is excellent, chronicling the history of the property (which is totally fascinating). Built by the Earl of Dumfries in 1759, the Palladian estate is located in Ayrshire, Scotland. The property contains over 50 (yes, 50!) commissioned pieces of furniture from an up-and-coming 18th century designer named Thomas Chippendale. Can you believe it? One Chippendale cabinet, which resides within the home, is valued at $8 million.

Dumfries House has remained mostly vacant for the last 150 years. And in 2005, the owners found it just too much to handle. So, they contacted Christies Auction House and decided to sell it and all it's belongings. That's when the drama unfolds... Just weeks before the historic auction is set to take place, Prince Charles decides to buy the 2,000 acre property and everything in it. Trucks full of furniture, on their way to London, literally turned around and went back. Great story, right? The palace has been lovingly restored, with exceptional attention to detail. It now stands as a proud historical testament to British art & architecture. The Dumfries House is also open to visitors, and Prince Charles returns to the property about 5 times a year.

The Bar Cart

A great bar cart can make a party happen in any room. Am I right, or am I right?

If the bar cart is on wheels, well, you can take it from the dining room to the living room (and back again!). We're partial to our "Alfred" Bar Cart-- with it's polished nickel frame and mirrored countertops...

But, I also loooove this brass version from Williams Sonoma. Leather handles, people!

Two Ottomans & A Coffee Table

I'm working on a living room design for a local Philadelphia client, and in place of the traditional large square coffee table, I've decided to use a threesome of two ottomans and a rectangular coffee table. I love this type of grouping for so many reasons: 1) it's much more interesting than one large table, 2) the two ottomans can provide extra seating when entertaining, and 3) it's flexible. And, in this case, the ottomans will be sitting right in front of a fireplace. So, they provide the perfect place to cozy up and get warm. :)

I searched my inspiration files for some good examples of this threesome, and I think that Victoria Hagan does it best. The ottomans are so tailored, they seem like an extension of the coffee table itself:

Christmas Break

Dave and I went to Indianapolis for the Christmas holiday. We spent three wonderful days visiting with my family, and celebrating the best parts of life. My pregnant sister and her husband flew in from Florida, and my grandmother and aunt flew in from Southern California. It was a full house! We spent many late nights chatting around the kitchen island, and sipping mulled wine. We played games, and watched movies (It's A Wonderful Life-- the best Christmas movie ever made, in my opinion).

Mom had the house completely decked out for the holiday...

Mulled Wine

Have I talked about mulled wine on this blog before? It's one of my favorite Christmas traditions. I first made it for a Christmas party that I co-hosted (during my single years) living in Santa Monica. My co-host (and foodie friend) Karen, suggested that we make it... and incidentally, it was a huge hit. I've been hooked ever since. There's just something about this warm, spicy wine that makes Christmas even more festive. I've decided that I will make it every year. :)

There are a bunch of different ways to make mulled wine (and I'm sure that most versions are delicious-- it's pretty simple), but I like to make my Christmas mulled wine with brandy. The brandy just makes it a little more interesting. So, here's my recipe:

Robson Family Mulled Wine

1 bottle of red wine

1/3 - 1/2 cup of brandy

1 whole orange, zested and sliced

1/2 cup of sugar

7-10 whole cloves

a few cinnamon sticks

allspice, ginger, or nutmeg to taste

Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker or a large pot. Heat on low until the mixture is steaming (do not boil! This is bad). I like to let it simmer for about 30 minutes, if not longer. The sugar should be dissolved at this point, and all of the ingredients should have enough time to "mull" together. Ladle into mugs or glasses and garnish with an orange slice and/or a cinnamon stick. Listen to Christmas Carols, visit with friends and family, and then go back for a second glass! Enjoy Holiday Cheer all evening.

The Jet Set House

Do you guys read the website, Curbed? It's a site that focuses on real estate... with a celebrity/interior design twist. It's great. Highly recommend it for the factual, yet sensational articles. This week, they posted a bit of interesting news. If you're a Mad Men fan (and I most certainly am), you might remember that amazing mid-century gem of a house in Season 2. The episode was appropriately called "The Jet Set". Remember? Don travels to LA, goes off the rails and escapes with those gypsies? They stay at this STUNNER of a home and the scene appears to be taken right out of a Slim Aarons photograph...

Anyway, that place is for sale. And, if you have a cool $12 million to spare, it might be a great investment for you:

This home has some serious Hollywood history:

"The Fox Residence in Chatsworth is up for sale. The 1951 Pereira & Luckman house has an incredibly star-studded history from its early days all the way to today. It was built for Chase Manhattan Bank heiress Dora Hutchinson, who, according to Forbes, threw "massive who’s who parties for Hollywood, hosting the A-list likes of Lucille Ball and Ava Gardner, and shooting off fireworks to signal Happy Hour to her neighbors." The listing says that Judy Garland and Vicente Minnelli were married on the property. After Hutchinson moved to New York, she rented the Fox (also known as the Farralone) to Frank Sinatra for almost a decade, who in turn sublet the guesthouse (which has its own pool) to Marilyn Monroe. She had her last, famous photoshoot in one of the pools and supposedly spent time there with John F. Kennedy. More recently, it made Mad Men viewers drool playing a Palm Springs house in the episode "The Jet Set." Dreamgirls, Ali, and Californication also filmed there."

What a remarkable life this house has lived! And, this gorgeous piece of architectural history also EARNS money. It brings in about $2 million a year in filming fees.

And, I'd say it's worth it. Talk about picturesque.

Before & After: Diamond Tufted Side Chairs

Earlier this year, I stumbled upon these AMAZING little side chairs on an antiquing trip. Even though they were missing some buttons and the yellow velvet upholstery had seen better days, I knew they had great potential. So, we bought them and hoarded them away for a future makeover.

And finally, their time has come!

When choosing an upholstery fabric, I wanted something simple and sleek. So, I stayed away from patterns and prints (although, I was tempted to pick a pinstripe), and I landed on a luxurious chocolate linen with a subtle grey undertone. I wanted the fabric to almost blend with the color of the wood frame, so all the focus was directed at the gorgeous diamond tufting.

I picked up the two chairs from our upholsterer this week, and I'm beyond thrilled with the result...

In addition to the new upholstery, we had them completely re-stuffed. They now have brand new springs, and they're SO comfortable. For the finishing touch, we picked an antique brass nailhead to trim out the legs. Just a little bit of sparkle goes a long way.

The Carson Tray

We introduced a new product to the store this week. Dave (my business partner husband) designed it and had a local Philadelphia craftsman fabricate it. I'm in LOVE with the way it turned out:

The Carson Walnut Serving Tray

The "Carson" tray is made of solid American walnut, and fabricated right here in Philadelphia! This piece is completely food safe and makes a fantastic serving tray, as well as a cutting board. It was designed to resist warping-- just wipe it clean (and occasionally condition with mineral oil!). I love the modern design and gorgeous natural walnut finish.

I thought that one of my Philadelphia clients would enjoy it, so I wrapped it up (along with fresh baked bread from our local bakery) and made a little Christmas gift basket. Here's a sneak peek of it in her kitchen:

Weekend

Yesterday was my birthday aaaaaaand... now I'm 30. It feels good to be thirty.

Dave brought me my favorite cake (carrot cake with walnuts, raisins, and coconut-- delish!) and he even added the cheesy 3-0 candles. I loved it so much, I made him hold it out for me so I could take a quick picture. :) Birthday cake for lunch is the best thing.

On Friday, there was a surprise visit from Kate Spade:

On Saturday night, Dave and I went out to a fancy dinner to celebrate the milestone. I ordered the chocolate peppermint souffle for dessert, and Dave ordered the apple fig tart...

On Sunday, I took a few hours to myself and did a little shopping at the King of Prussia Mall (a mall that rivals all others). A quick browse through Ralph Lauren was required after I spotted this stunning leather trunk:

Boots

My mom is my style guru. I'm (almost) 30, and she's (almost) 60, and I turn to her for nearly all of my fashion advice (Once, when shopping by myself, I emailed her an iphone picture of clothes in the dressing room-- "What should I buy, Mom?" and she would text me back. She's that good, and I'm that dependant).

So, when she emailed me a link to these boots a few weeks ago, my heart skipped a beat. When they arrived on my doorstep, I immediately put them on... and I've been wearing them ever since. In fact, I've already ordered two more pairs: one in black, and another pair in "brandy" (for next winter... a girl can't be too prepared). They're cute, aren't they? They're also on SALE in a major way (less than $150.00).

*Side note: there isn't a tall boot on the planet that fits my freakishly large calves. Really. I've been excluded from every winter look: boots + skinny jeans, boots + pencil skirt, boots + tights & dresses. It's so sad. But, these boots fit me. It's a Christmas miracle. They're completely adjustable on one side, and they zip up on the other. I finally feel like I fit in with the stylish girls. I have tall boots now!!! Look at me!

So, if you also suffer from this disorder, go get yourself a pair already.

It's very interesting to hear Celerie's perspective on black & white. For a designer who (at times) is defined by her bold use of color, the black and white palette can feel refined. Celerie says that it shows restraint. Editing a room down to such a simplified scheme can sometimes be the most fascinating. The book is a compilation of rooms designed by Celerie herself, as well as other interior design superstars (think Bunny Williams, Victoria Hagan, Carrier & Co, and Miles Redd to name a few).

Lucus Studio, Interior Design

A few weeks ago, I posted a House Beautiful feature designed by Lucus Studio Interior Design. Since then, I've been POURING over their fantastic portfolio. Their work is really tremendous, and it's become a major source of inspiration for me over the last month. I particularly love the way they blend traditional furnishings with unexpected eclectic pieces and one-of-a-kind antiques. Every space is comfortable and unpretentious... yet, extremely rich and sophisticated. The perfect combination.

Husband & Wife Team: Kate & Andy Spade

We interrupt our regularly scheduled broadcast... I feel like saying that after two SOLID weeks of product sneak peeks! But, anyway. While we work on perfecting the new online shop (there's so much to do!), let's talk about something different. Just for a sec.

So, have you seen the new Matchbook Magazine? Those Matchbook girls have got it going on. I mean it! They're really paving their own way in this world of digital magazines. Creating their own niche, and I love it. Their current issue is full of interesting articles, fashion tips, and gift guides. But, my favorite feature was the interview with husband and wife team, Kate & Andy Spade. As someone who works with their spouse, I'm always fascinated by other couples that make it work. It's really an interesting dynamic, and Kate & Andy Spade are true entrepreneurs.

Of course, their home is stunning. And, their story is just as interesting. Did you know that they met in college? Or, that they started the company with no money at all? Kate & Andy took pride in the fact that they only hired people that were talented and nice. And once you joined the Kate Space team, you were given a copy of Emily Post's Etiquette. It's sort of fascinating, isn't it?

Vintage City Maps

Day 9 of our High Street Market HOME sneak peeks!! It's only a matter of days before we launch the new online store (I can't believe I'm even writing that, it's so exciting!). And today's sneak peek is about vintage city maps!

Professionally matted and framed, our collection of vintage city maps is pretty extensive-- we've been collecting them for years! And of course, since they are vintage, quantities are limited. But, we'll be offering such large cities as Manhattan, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and Seattle. We also have maps of Indianapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Rochester, New Orleans, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Detriot, and Portland. They are all matted and framed in a skinny black wooden frame. Each one dates between 1930 and 1940.

The High Street Market HOME store will be open next week! Until then, we're posting exclusive sneak peeks of the new shop on this blog. Check back on Monday to see another one of our new products.

Today's High Street Market HOME sneak peek is one of my favorite items! It's our Black Faux Bamboo Tray Table, and it could be the most versatile piece of "furniture" that you'll ever own. If you like to entertain? This tray table is the perfect workhorse for your next party. Set it up to serve appetizers, beverages, or dessert. Pick up the tray from the base and carry it to serve your guests. The glossy finish makes it easy to wipe clean. When the party is over, fold it up and store it away for the next soiree.

It's also very sturdy, which makes it perfect to use as a regular piece of furniture. Use it as a bedside table or hallway table. Or, set it up in the dining room to create a permanent bar cart! We love the simple lines and fabulous faux bamboo style.

Over the past few years, Dave and I have come across some amazing vintage brass pieces in our shopping excursions. Brass trays, brass door knockers, brass animals, etc. And, when we fall in love with that one fabulous item, it always kills us that we can't get more of them. So, we decided that we would try to make our own products. Yes! Our own small collection (in limited edition) of unique brass pieces that were inspired by our vintage finds, but relevant to a modern lifestyle. Made exclusively for High Street Market, here are some of the brass products that will be available for in our new store...

Large Brass Wall Hooks with a diamond shape back plate

These wall hooks are the perfect place to hang your bag at the end of the day! Use a group of them down a hallway, or in a mudroom. Use a single hook on the back of a door, or near the entry. We love the unique diamond back plate and heavy double hook. Each one measures 8" high and 6" wide

Solid Brass "Ring" Door Knocker

One of my all time favorite pieces. This door knocker is made of heavy solid brass with a polished finish. The simple over-sized ring goes with virtually any house style, from modern to historic. We love the sleek mounting bracket, and the square brass plate to protect your door!

Today's sneak peek is our Winston Wood Table Lamp. It's one of our favorites! Inspired by mid-century Danish design, we created this table lamp specifically for our store. Handmade in the USA, these table lamps are constructed of solid wood. They're then sanded smooth to create the most luxurious satin walnut finish. Each one features an upgraded nickel-plated socket and switch.

It's a strikingly modern lamp that actually works with many different design styles. It's so versatile, that we had it made in two different sizes!

Day 5 of the High Street Market HOME sneak peeks. In addition to offering cozy throw blankets, we'll also be stocking custom throw pillows! Plaids, herringbones, large florals, and simple linens... graphic ikats, snow leopard, and even zebra. Each pillow is unique to our store and extremely well-made, with double seams (for extra durability) and invisible zippers! While many of our pillow styles will be staples in the new shop, others will rotate with the seasons.

One of our favorites is this linen-covered pillow with the phrase "Don't Give Up The Ship"! This phrase was originally shouted by the dying captain of the USS Chesapeake during The War of 1812. It soon after become an inspirational rally cry for the entire nation during a time of war. We thought that this historical phrase was wonderfully inspiring and applicable to today, so we had it made for our store. Don't Give Up The Ship! Available in either navy linen (with white writing) or ivory linen (with black writing), each one measures 14" x 18" and includes a down insert.

Day 4 of the High Street Market HOME sneak peeks! When we came up with the idea of opening a larger online shop, we wanted to create a shopping experience where customers could shop for new and vintage items in the same spot. After all, good design includes both! And as you might imagine, the "vintage" section of our new store is very comprehensive. We'll be offering vintage furniture, lighting, home accessories, and even hardware (more on that next week!). We will continue to offer a wide assortment of unique items at affordable price points. And at the same time, the new shop gives us the opportunity to display some of our BEST vintage finds. Many of these peices are rare, and historically significant. They are sophisticated, and some are a little unexpected. We think that our vintage section will become an excellent resource for people looking for top notch vintage finds (without the astronomical prices). We're really excited about it.

Here are some of the vintage pieces in our inventory:

1948 Solid Brass Racehorse Doorstop

Designed by Calvin Roy Kinstler, this racehorse doorstop depicts "Citation", the 1948 winner of the Triple Crown.

Original 1965 Lytegem task lamp by Lightolier.

Designed by Michael Lax and produced by Lightolier, this task lamp has been a permanent part of the New York Museum of Modern Art collection. Famous for creating the most perfect reading light! This lamp adjusts every which way, and can even be mounted on the wall to be used as a wall sconce.

1960s Paul McCobb Mahogany Credenza with Brass Base

Made of mahogany and standing on a brass base, this credenza was designed by Paul McCobb. This American born designer studied art in Boston, before going off to serve in WWII. Upon his return, he began his career as a furniture designer in New York City. His future works were later licensed with a variety of American furniture manufacturers. A major influrence on mid-century design, Paul McCobb was known as "Americas Decorator".

The new vintage section of our store will be ever evolving, and we'll update it daily. It will include a full range of price points (so there's something for everyone!).

To answer your questions, we will not be closing the Etsy shop! The High Street Market etsy shop will continue to list vintage housewares on a daily basis.

Day 3 of our High Street Market HOME sneak peeks! Today, let's talk about super luxurious, graphic knit throw blankets. We'll be selling these blankets in two different prints (chevron and Greek key), in three different colorways-- Persimmon, Aqua, and Navy Blue. I LOVE these blankets. And, let me tell you why:

First of all, they're made in the USA (this is very important to us). Second, they are SO wonderfully soft-- you'll love to cuddle under one of these throw blankets this winter! Third, they are reversible and the quality is top notch! And finally, they're 100% cotton and machine washable (use cold water on the gentle cycle). Day 2 of the High Street Market HOME sneak peeks. Today, I want to show you our collection of bone clad storage boxes! I adore this group-- available in classic white as well as black (which is stunning). We also have a few versions with an etched design-- in fact, the fluer de lis box was custom made for our store! Keep them on a bedside table to hold jewelry or cufflinks. Or, use a collection of boxes at your desk to keep paperclips, notes, and other office supplies at bay.

This little "Mermaid" box is my favorite...

The Ava Bamboo Table Lamp

The Ava Bamboo Table Lamp is a High Street Market original, completely custom made for our store. Inspired by a vintage piece, this table lamp is streamlined for modern living, yet greatly influenced by 1940s Hollywood Regency design. Standing on a solid wood base, the Ava Bamboo Table Lamp has a subtle crackle glaze and it's finished in a color that we call "tusk". The socket is made of polished brass, and it features an upgraded brass socket and switch.

It makes a marvelous bedside lamp, or use a pair of these Ava lamps to flank a dining room credenza.

Since we designed this lamp and had it manufactured, can I talk about quality for a sec? We're really proud of the materials that went into creating this piece! It has a solid wood base, and polished brass fittings-- two upgraded design details that most retailers won't offer. The ceramic body is extremely well made, and we think that the soft crackle glaze adds a little more interest than a flat finish would. The price is extremely competitive too (well under $200.00 per lamp).

Today, I am proud to announce the upcoming opening of the High Street Market home store-- a comprehensive online shop offering a selection of new and vintage furnishings. This project has been in the works for years, and it's truly a thrill for me to share the good news with you today. I've been keeping it a secret for so long! And boy, have we been busy over here. A few years ago, my husband and I started High Street Market (the etsy shop) through a mutual adoration of antiques and unique vintage furnishings. Since then, we've spent thousands of hours (and many early mornings) at estate sales, auctions, and flea markets. We've driven all over the east coast, cleaned and restored one of a kind finds, connected with like-minded people, and built a system of dependable resources. We truly love what we do and I think that we make a great team: I have a passion for design, Dave has a love for business. We both have a drive for finding and creating objects that are beautiful and functional, trend resistant, and made of exceptional quality. We look for these characteristics in every single item that we buy.

High Street Market HOME will be opening this November! There will be a large collection of vintage items, including furniture, home accessories, hardware, and textiles. We'll also be offering a selection of new products, like servingware, barware, pillows, throw blankets, and table linens. But what I'm most proud of are the products that we've designed ourselves. Have An Exciting Weekend

Do you have any exciting plans this weekend? On Saturday morning, I will be going to one of my favorite farmer's markets in Berks County to buy some pumpkins and a some mums! I went there last year too-- they're the best! A couple of large potted mums will look nice on the front porch. There's also an Amish family that sells baked goods there. So, I might buy an apple pie. And, a loaf of pumpkin bread, and maybe some moon pies. :) I can never resist Amish baked treats.

I hope to see you back here on Monday because I have a big huge giant announcement that I can't wait to share with you! I'm so excited, I can hardly stand it.

The Alternative Jack O' Lantern

Halloween is a mere 10 days away, and that means it's almost time to carve Jack O' Lanterns! Here are three little pumpkins that I carved for our porch last Halloween...

I was thinking about doing something different this year. So, I did a little research and found a whole slew of inspiring ideas for "alternative" Jack O' Lanterns. Here are some of my favorites to help spruce up your own haunted house (or spooky front porch)...

Paint the pumpkin black! Next carve out the face, add whiskers and ears, and you have a Black Cat O' Lantern (or Bat O' Lantern).

With black paint or permanent marker, create the silhouette of a haunted house (it could even be your own house!), and carve out windows and a large looming full moon.

Perfect for tiny pumpkins or gourds-- use red push pins for eyes and vampire teeth!

Maybe you don't have time to carve a pumpkin (or you're not too keen on making a huge mess). These no-carve ideas seem super simple and really fun...

Candy corn pumpkins!

Using a fine-tipped Sharpie pen and a paper doily as a stencil, draw a detailed pattern on the pumpkins. Love this vintage look!

I love this place setting idea-- perfect for a spooky Halloween dinner party. Attach bat wings and you're done.

You don't even need a pumpkin for this adorable display. Just a magic marker and a few ballons!

Last October, I used a carved out pumpkin to create a lovely fall centerpiece:

(and used a vegetable peeler to monogram it!)

By using a similarly carved out pumpkin, you'll have an instant beer cooler!

There are so many ways to get into the Halloween spirit this week.

I think I'll try to make one of those doily pumpkins this weekend. :)

What's your favorite style of Jack O' Lantern? I tend to carve pumpkins with scary faces (boo!) and my husband loves to make a "cannibal pumpkin" (where one big Jack O' Lantern appears to be eating a smaller one). My parents always carved friendly Jack O' Lanterns with big smiley faces and happy eyes. They even topped them with straw hats.

The new House Beautiful landed in my mailbox this week, and it's full of super inspiring images. This Hermosa Beach bachelor pad was one of my favorites. It's pretty awesome.

I love homes that are beautiful and easy to live in. This one definitely fits that criteria. You had me at black, six-pane dutch door entryway with glass lanterns! Love the endless yards of fabric that frame the windows, the cushy velvet sofa, that blue kitchen. And, I love the giant elk antlers at the base of the stairs (so amazing). Doesn't it seem like you could move right in? It's so chic without trying too hard.

The designers had a fun tip in regards to throw pillows on the sofa: three to five pillows is enough-- a few should coordinate, the last one should be totally off.

Scandi-Greek Chic

Little Girls Room

One of my design clients recently moved her family from Manhattan to San Francisco. And as you can imagine, the big move came with a huge upgrade in livable space. This family went from living in a modern 3-bedroom apartment to a stunning 3-story historic home. They now have a yard, and plenty of windows that let oodles of natural light into every room (the house also has original milk glass fixtures, inlaid hardwood floors, and a butler's pantry with floor to ceiling cabinets!! To die for.).

Over the past eight months, we've been furnishing the house together, room by room. And just this weekend, I worked on the design of her daughter's room! Inspired by these dreamy inspiration shots, I wanted to create a space that was light and bright, imaginative, and a little bohemian (they're living in San Francisco, after all). It needed a healthy dose of pink and purple (the 4-year old resident's favorite colors), mixed with simple neutrals like white and grey.

And, here's what I came up with:

I love the balance between the modern white furniture and the girly tufted side chair. Adding some eclectic pieces (like the rug, pillow, and pom pom throw) create additional interest, and they kick things up a notch. I think that this space will easily transition from "4-year old" to "14 year old".

Designer Tip: Inverted Box Pleat Drapery

Whenever someone asks me about drapery styles, I always start talking about the inverted box pleat. I love the clean pleat and versatile feel-- it goes with almost every interior style. It's my go-to drape.

Drapery panels made with an inverted box pleat are double the fullness of the window. So they always look full and luxurious. When you close these drapes, the top of the panel is smooth and flat (creating a clean modern look). Then, when they're open? The box pleats stack PERFECTLY. They never look fussy, or "old lady"... I love this tailored style. It's my fave.

If you can't afford to have them custom made, you can buy FABULOUS versions at Restoration Hardware. Really. They make such a wonderful ready-made drape. With an inverted box pleat.

Cover Girl

The newest issue of Matchbook Magazine is on virtual newsstands now, and the cover is just stunning. I love the simplicity of this cover design. It's so inspirational (in my humble opinion). The color, the dress, the simple and minimal text. Gucci glasses, bouffant hair, and an overwhelming nod to 1960s style. The subject of this marvelous portrait is Joy Venturini Bianchi. She runs a vintage couture shop that benefits disabled adults in the San Francisco area. And at age 72, Bianchi believes that "clothes are about good manners." Isn't that a refreshing thought?

Doesn't it seem that the newest trend in women's fashion is actually a throw back to 1960s style? Let the heavens rejoice. We're moving away from women dressing like men, and going back to women dressing like women. I love it. Structured, sexy dresses with conservative cuts and modern silhouettes. Trenchcoats, ballet flats, cigarette pants, and even lady-like blouses. Reminiscent of fashion icons Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Jacqueline Kennedy.

Today, I'm back in Philadelphia after spending a wonderful weekend in Indianapolis. My parents moved there while I was in college and even though I've never lived there personally, it always feels like home when I'm back in that city. Have you ever been there? The people are so friendly. They smile and say hello to you at the super market... and when you're driving on the highway? They actually wave you into their lane if you put on your blinker. How remarkable. Do you live in a friendly city? If you do, please share!

And, today I am grateful. Grateful for my health, my husband, my dear friends, my loving family. I'm grateful that I found my passion early in life, I acted on it, and now I'm working in an industry that I adore. I'm thankful to be building a business that is completely mine. I'm thankful for my amazing clients who allow me to provide input on their gorgeous homes. I love working with nice people. I'm thankful for you, my insightful readers. Reading your comments and getting your emails makes this blogging thing a whole lot of fun. :) So, thank you. I'm grateful for you.

Sometimes, I get caught up in the daily stresses, deadlines, and never ending to-do lists. I worry about our home renovation, when it will end, how much it will cost, when we'll be able to get started on this or that project. I forget where I put things, sometimes I'm late, and I worry that I'm doing it all wrong. But, I'm not. Everything is fine and sometimes, I just need to stop and breathe. Everyone has their own journey. We all get to where we're going at some point. I just need to stay on track. Stay focused and take one day at a time.

Had a fabulous day, visiting my mom in Indianapolis today. I flew into town last night. My goodness, the weather is gorgeous here! We spent the day hiking through Eagle Creek Park, followed by lunch and beers at Rick's Boat Yard. Yum.

I Never Cared Before, But Now You've Got My Interest...

I'm talking about... Missoni for Target.

We all know the ending to this story. Missoni madness! Sold out in one day! And, I like Missoni. But I didn't go crazy for the Missoni for Target line (unfortunately, I don't look very good in zig zag dresses).

But, wait. It's more than zig zag dresses.

And, now I'm interested. One week too late.

How did I miss this? Just look at this fun suitcase:

I usually gravitate toward linen-covered shades. They tend to feel a bit softer and I like seeing the warp and weft of the linen when the lamp is illuminated. But if you want the dramatic feel that an opaque shade provides? Paper shades are the way to go. The opaque paper creates a black-out effect, and they're often times lined with a brighter material (gold, silver, etc).

New Project Sneak Peek

Sorry for the recent radio silence on the blog my sweet blogging friends! I was out of town all week, working on a very exciting project (I can't wait to share the details with you next month). It was productive and exhausting, thrilling and a little overwhelming too. My week involved some interior photoshoots, and a lot of "cross that off the list", "what's next?" and "let's get that done!". You know those kind of work days? It feels good to cross things off the list, doesn't it? :)

Here's a quick sneak peek of this project. I snapped this shot with my camera, so please forgive the poor lighting (and tilted lampshades!)...

In design school they tell you that the color red increases enthusiasm and makes you feel more confident. Red stimulates action, while at the same time making you feel protected and safe. It is the color of love, and at the same time, it's the color of sin! How can the color red make us feel so many things at once?! Regardless of the psychology, I think red is a sensational color. It seems to make everything more interesting...

Haberdasher: noun. 1. a dealer in mens furnishings 2. a dealer in small articles for sewing, such as buttons, zips, and ribbons.

I love this word: haberdashery. Lonny used it on one of the the market pages of their new issue (out this weekend), and I was instantly smitten. I already love all things menswear... houndstooth, herringbone, stripes, leather, brass, etc... and now I have a word that encompasses it all.

I recently ordered a copy of Victoria Hagan's new book Interior Portraits. (I was placing an order on Amazon.com for an unrelated item and I wanted to qualify for free shipping! So, I added it to my cart as an after thought). And, when it arrived? Boy oh boy, was I surprised. This book is SENSATIONAL. Large glossy images of stunning interiors... representing both modern and traditional styles. It's easily one of my favorite interior design books (if not my absolute fave).

It's a "must own" type of book. And, it will only set you back about $30.00 on Amazon.com. Buy it HERE. It's totally worth it, if you ask me.

Hurricanes Are Emotionally Exhausting

So, Hurricane Irene hit us a little harder than I anticipated. My God! What an emotionally exhausting weekend! Were you in harms way? How did you fare during the storm? We experienced lots and lots and lots of water. High winds and tornado warnings. Our home survived with very little damage, but other people in our area weren't so lucky. Some of our friends lost power early on, and ended up with completely flooded basements (horrifying). Other families in the Philadelphia area suffered major damage from floods and high winds. I listen to their stories on the local news and my heart breaks. It was a very scary night and I hope we never have to experience something like that again.

After this weekend, I learned a few things:

1. We need a sump pump (and maybe a generator-- can't be too prepared!)
2. We have way too much junk in our basement
3. There's a leak near one of our chimneys
4. My husband and I work very well together under pressure
5. The Philadelphia news teams on ABC, CBS, and NBC are tremendous. These people stayed on the air for 12+ hours straight, giving us the latest updates and weather reports. They helped people stay connected and get prepared.
6. I'm so proud of my new city.

This storm has set me back a few days (let's put it this way: there are half a dozen storage bins in my office that were previously living in the basement). The house is a total mess. So, I need a take a quick little break from the blog this week to recover. But, I promise to be back soon.

Everyone is talking about Irene! Hurricane Irene... she's threatening the Atlantic coastline with 110 mph winds and coastal flooding. Are you in the path of the storm? What have you done to prepare? We're staying put in Philadelphia and hoping it doesn't hit us too hard.

Today, I thought I would talk about a different Irene: Irene Suchocki. She's a Montreal based photographer and her work is soooo dreamy. I'm smitten with quite a few pieces. Especially the cityscapes: New York, Paris, the Italian coastline... Check out her portfolio:

Army Green

This Martha Stewart paint is the most perfect shade of army green:

Martha Stewart "Clove"

It's called "Clove". And if you go to Home Depot (where Martha Stewart paint is sold) this paint looks more like "chocolate brown" under the flourescent lights. But trust me. This paint is ARMY GREEN. And, it's an insane shade of army green. The perfect amount of green, perfect amount of khaki. I used it on a recent project (that I can't share with you yet-- but in a month or so, I will!) and I'm thrilled with the results.

I think that army green is a splendid color for kitchen cabinets. Nate Berkus used it in his Chicago kitchen...

Steal This Idea: Same Fabric, Different Colorways

Yesterday, I posted some images of Tom Dolby & Drew Frist's home (featured in Lonny Magazine last year). It's really a cool place and everytime I look at the shots, I see something new.

Like these floor pillows in their living room:

Tom & Drew chose one of my favorite fabrics, "Betwixt" by Celerie Kemble. But, instead of committing to one colorway, they went with two. How unexpected and fun!

I think that this concept works for the following reasons:

The fabrics compliment each other rather than compete. And, I love how one side reads almost as a solid, featuring two similar shades of blue.
The print is simple. Stick with a small, graphic, two-color print (rather than a crazy multi-colored fabric).
They're used in a large scale. While I'm sure this concept would be great on small throw pillows, I just LOVE the impact it creates on larger floor pillows. It might also be fun to try this concept on Euro shams (and dog beds too!).

Off the top of my head, I think that these fabrics would make for some fun combinations:

Vintage Color Scheme: Navy + Magenta + Green

Last weekend, I found this vintage handkerchief at a local flea market (the Golden Nugget in Lambertville, New Jersey to be exact). It was only a dollar, and even though I have roughly no use for it, I had to have it. Just look at that amazing color scheme!

Wouldn't this color scheme translate beautifully into a bedroom design? I thought so. So, here's what I came up with...
